Hidden Hermits and Inactive Mexican Turbo Snails

I put in a clean up crew in my 20 gallon long tank only 2 days ago. The hermits his as soon as they became active on the first day and I haven’t seen them since. The snails have yet to come out of their shells and I’m afraid they might be dead. Is this normal for these creatures to do that?

What type of snails are they? Snails can take a long time to settle in, if all your parameters are where they’re supposed to be I’d say it’ll be fine.

Take note of where your snail is today and check to see if its in the same spot tomorrow. or try pulling it off the rock gently. I hardly ever see any of my crabs somedays and other days I can count them all.

I only have 3 of the snails. They’re in the same position in the sand I first put them in. I own freshwater and I’ve never had them not move after being put in before. I thought I saw one of the snails move around just peeking out yesterday but I could be wrong.

I have 3 Mexican Turbo Snails. All my parameters check out so I guess they’ll just take time to come out.

I just floated them for 15 minutes in the bag and then put them in. I was told temperature acclimation would be fine for them. My salinity is at 2.026, pH is at 8.2, and my KH is at 9

I recently killed a few Turbo and trochus snails by nor acclimating them properly. My latest batch of four Turbos and twelve trochus got a full one hour drip acclimation like the fish get and they were active and eating within one day of being placed in the display without any losses.

I guess I’ll have to try that out then. I’m gonna give it another day or two before I see if they’re dead or not.

I am assuming you meant 1.026. I always drip acclimate inverts, I don't care what they are. Hermits and snails are tough little boogers but if the salinity was lower in the bag than your water, say 1.018, which a lot of stores keep them at in the holding tanks, they would have a harder time adjusting.

I don’t think you got them shipped, but the same thing applies to bringing them home and putting them in a new environment. This is what Reefcleaners.org says.

Yes that’s what I meant. I’ll give them a few more days to adjust. I have some extra shells coming for the hermits in the mail in case they’ve molted and are just hiding until a shell comes along. I think they salinity was lower (don’t remember what the LFS told me) but in any case I’m sure it’ll just take another day or two

Pull one of the inactive snails out and smell it, you will know if it is dead or not.

Normally they won’t really have a smell, but if it’s dead you’ll know
