I want to use egg crate under the substrate of my new tank. I'd prefer having it go edge to the edge for more stability (well, it fits tight in one dimension and nearly as well the other way). However, I'm using Seachem Silver Shores substrate, which is larger granule with not much sand in it. I could add some sand to the very small gap between the egg crate and the glass, but I suspect it would get sucked up during gravel cleanings. Do individuals who advocate sizing the egg crate edge to edge simply let the egg crate show? Or should I cut the crate back one row and have substrate fill in the gap to stabilize it?

This would be the answer I would suggest.

If I were going to utilize the egg crate, I'd leave it back a row or two from the edge. The weight of the rock and sand on top will be enough to prevent it from sliding around. That way it surely doesn't get exposed. Removing a row or two once installed and the tank is up and running would be a major task I'd guess.

I haven't used egg crate in maybe 15 years and then used to distribute the pressure points just under the LR where the bulk weight was.

You could just cut smaller pieces of egg crate to size and just put them under the main pressure points ensuring protection against burrowing critters such as gobies, wrasses bulldozer shrimp or whatever and still have the plenty of room so the sand sifters could freely move about and do their thing.

Most of all welcome to R2R. :)

I just buried mine completely in substrate.....that being said, I want to remove most of the substrate and plan on using the egg crate to support a bunch of Acans :-)
