High Alk with low nutrients = sps death???

Russ will my coral show a negative reaction to increased nitrates?
I am stable at 4ppm no3 and .014-.018 po4
I have some not looking good! Poor mind trick is loosing tissue saddens me :(
 
no coral dies at 5ppm nitrate lol.
post other parameters and lets see how he looks.
 
i just recently brought a dual reactor for gfo and carbon but have installed it yet. so my sump only has a protien skimmer, a heater, some live rocks and the return pump. my dosing pump is dosing into the sump. i used to have a bag of carbon and phosguard but i removed it.

just get some nitrates in the system man. leave gfo off. feed cyclopeeze or oyster feast or pellets. amino acids might not hurt either. just be easy on it.

they are starving hard.

Thanks I have backed my light off and flow for me has always been a small issue. I am looking at buying some of the controllable power heads to break up the flow a little more. Its too linear for me right now.
 
Thank goodness I dose potassium nitrate!
I think I cooked the poor guy but he is strong and will come back!
 
Could dosing higher nitrates counter high alkalinity or do phosphates need to be up as well?

My alkalinity isn't dropping on its own and I just switched to neomarine. It's currently at 10dkh. Water changes seem bring it down, but slowly. I'm seeing some more STN on my greyed out Jedi mind trick.

I've been dosing potassium nitrate and keeping my nitrates in the 5-10ppm range (API kit).

Phosphates stay at 0.00 on my Hanna despite feeding mysis and pellets each day.

you may need to give a dose of po4. but that is for extreme cases and you gotta be super careful.

stop water changes. most salt batches have high alk and counter the drop you are looking for.

ime grey montis are a combination of lack of nutrients and strong light.

I stopped GFO weeks ago. My salt is neomarine and mixes to 7dkh. I dosed it up to 8dkh before the last water change.

i wouldnt dose alk until 24 hours after introducing new water. my .02.

if you are sure you have no po4, and are already feeding. you could try flourish phosphorus. i have it as well, but my phosphates are usually just barely detectable.

i would stop water changing alltogether.

I was dosing the water change water, not the display tank. I was afraid that a 7dkh PWC would upset the corals.

How might I drop alkalinity without a PWC? My corals aren't growing, much, and thus alkalinity staying high.

Might higher dKH with higher nutrients be the way to go then?

alk will drop by itself. corals dont have to drink anything. itll slowly go down naturally.
a partial 10-20% wc i think is fine and shouldnt affect your display too much

something was tested wrong. you cant put 8 dkh water in a 9 system and it hit 10. something is off

My display is 10dkh. My neomarine mixes to 7dkh and I add alkalinity buffer to bring the neomarine to 8dkh. This 8dkh neomarine is what I've started to use for my PWC water. I could just use the neomarine as is at 7dkh and do smaller PWC ?

i would let it drop naturally. no water changes. keep an eye on calcium as you ride it down.

I've begun using some coral food that I got awhile ago from reefcleaners.org

I'll also feed pellets from now on as well as the mysis until I start seeing some phosphates.

I checked my Hanna on some old water and found 0.03ppm phosphate, so I know it works at least. I've never had a problem KEEPING phosphates before. Before my reboot, I had bad hair Algea and bryopsis.

I should mention, there is some bubble Algea and some turf Algea present. Could that be consuming my nutrients before my corals can?
