High Alkalinity!!!

I just wanted to clarify not to use vinegar. You did not clarify why not to use it. No need to quote the rest of the post as there was no context on why not to use it.

If you knew it already, why suggest it?

Obviously because it is a way to quickly and easily lower alk.... and that was the question. Yes in time it goes back up, but it can be used when you have skyrocketed your alk and want to get it down immediately. I have used it myself during a doser mishap and it works quite well. In the same way kalk dosing increases ph..... but it will go back down unless continually dosed.... yet kalk (and other alk additives that have a ph increasing effect) are still used for their impact on ph. The fact it is not permanent was not an essential piece of the equation.

The reason I suggested just WC is not because it does not work, but because it is the better longterm solution and someone very new is probably going to cause more problems than solutions if trying to control high alk with vinegar. There was no reason to turn it into a chemistry discussion though.

I get the WC, and what I would have suggested.

My point was not to use vinegar cause all that will do is give a temporary lowering effect. It will eventually go back up without some other sort of intervention. Just bad advice IMO, and it needed to be clarified.

I could see some newb dumping vinegar into his tank to see a rapid depletion in ALK, to only go back up in a few hours.

And not turn it into a chemistry question? Isn't that what a marine tank is, a large chemistry experiment? LOL

Anyways, have a good day, I see no reason to continue this discussion.

Lol i guess you dont topoff with freshwater either. Its only temporary you know...it evaporates again :)

Like I said, no need to continue, you don't get it. Vinegar is only temp, without doing something else, it will go right back up in a matter of hours. You did not mention he needed to do something else to keep it lowered.

Ask @Randy Holmes-Farley why he never suggest uses vinegar to lower ALK. And yes this is 100% a chemistry question =, and one in which your dead wrong.

What am i wrong about? Are you saying vinegar does not lower alk? Again i never said it was permanent....and specifically suggested a different course of action. You just seem to be here tonight to argue. Have a beer and relax
