My tank had a power head detach while I was away caused a sandstorm which caused A nitrate spike which after 15 water changes is under control but now ammonia levels have spiked to dangerous levels

Gonna have to keep up with the water changes, unless you can throw some Ammo Lok in there.

Large water change and the appropriate formula of Dr. Tim's One and Only will fix you right up.

before you do anything check to see if the ammonia is free or locked up. Us the sechem multitest kit to determine or even the ammonia dot.

if the free ammonia is low basically do nothing.

FWIW I nitrate spike after some shock can be a sign the tank is actually healing itself as algae and othe rplant life are consuming ammonia but not nitrates. then when things settle down the algae reverts back to consuming nitrates.
