I'm doing a DIY sump and want to know what kinds of features that the high end sumps have that I could incorporate into mine? I see the RE ones that are thousands of dollars and wonder a little what really is going into that price? Brand name only, or is there something about the design that makes it worth that kind of money?

They dont have anything crazy just probe holder, dosing line holders, lazer cut lids and sliding dividers to adjust water level height

I have a Tigger Emerald 36. I honestly am not a fan. The Three things I think they have over the DIY'ers:

1. Dedicated box for the overflow to contain splash and salt creep. (although on the emerald, it was poorly placed)
2. Dosing holders
3. Probe holders

Outside of these..DIY is a way to go if you got the skills

The eshoppes refugium only gets maybe 10% of the flow going thru the sump. This is enough and limits the blow out of the stuff in the refugium, sand, mud critters chaeto etc..

A couple people have mentioned how the drain lines get connected to a lid with a bulkhead. Is this actually beneficial in some way? I’ve always just had the drains empty into their own compartment but just no lid and bulkhead.

Less salt creep since it flows into a closed compartment.

It never really splashed in mine since the drain line was below the water level in that compartment. The emergency line I kept above the water line so that I could hear if water was running down it.

It really depends on what you want in your sump. High end, lol.
I run a $50 40 breeder with no baffles.
7" filter sock takes care of my drain and remote 30g fuge drain.
Im not a fan of light in a sump.
Skimmer, media reactor, carx, return pump, and heater in the summer only.
I went with no baffles as its super easy to work in when needed.
Ato works just fine and no micro bubbles.
Only thing I would do is make it as big as you can.

I do like a big sump; mostly for a large fuge.
