We have been dosing 5ml of reef iodide In our 560 tank and this has been keeping it stable. but we have to adjust each week

is that 5ml per day? i have a dose calculated for my tank, but unsure of frequency...

This is a tuff question. We dose 5 ml per day seachem reef iodide.. our tank are packed with tenuis. It's hard to say what it would be for other tanks. I think you will need to get back to back icp tests to see what your consumption is

I started with a 1ml bolus over two days (approx 80-90mcg/l) last week to get something in and then was planning a dose of 0.5ml (~40mcg/l) 1x per week, but some of the noticeable positive changes in LPS have already dissipated ~2 days after last dose. Thinking the seachem product is safe enough i can probaably push it a little.

Be careful becouse anything over 110 iodine and the corals start to not look as great...

yes, you absolutely have to dose N03! IMO your corals consume it fast. I test my n03 every few days, actually if your no3 is at or under 5 i think tanks will not do well. once you get your no3 up you have to be careful to keep it up because once it its up and it drops it can crash your tank... also the tank will take a lot of n03 to become saturated with it. at 1st you will dose and dose it and it will not come up. this is because the starving corals are consuming it very fast, but once the tank is saturated with it you can dose less to maintain the value.


for example, in my 540-gallon system. when the no3 drops below 5 it will take me like 400ML a day of neontiro for 5 days to bring the n03 back to 16-32 ppm. but once the no3 is up there i can maintain it at 125ml per day. it takes some practice to keep proper no3 but this is IMO the key to good coloration and polyp extension.

Most people get frustrated with adding the no3 for the 1st few days because they can't seem to the value up and then testing it is a pain so they start feeding more. feeding more will just dirty up the tank and cause other issues. I use a controlled feeding method from American Reef HPD which actually brings the no3 down and po4 down to close to 0.. then i control it by dosing it up....

Can you explain how increasing no3 and po4 with heavier feeding is different from raising them through dosing? If heavier feeding will raise them, why not just go that route?

That is a great question. Imo heavier feeding will cause more waste and more detritus buildup.. more fish poop and more uneaten food can get trapped in the rocks and start to decay. This may lead to higher po4 and n03 but I think it may also lead to more decay and a dirty system which can lead to other issues ect.. the dosing method imo is just a cleaner method to create the same desired result which can be controlled easier

That is sounds like very big money on dosing ! I was dosing No3 and Po4 , with DIY receipe...it didn't took me 400 ml per day ,but I guess that is because neonitro and neophos is not concrete enough...anyway ,your tank look awesome mate

Hey bud, big things have been in the works so I haven’t spent much time on the tank. Going to upgrade to a larger tank. But in the mean time I had been throwing in a few drops of red seas iodine but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Here is my most recent icp test. Do you have any idea where the lithium is coming from. I’m dosing the neo nitro. Brightwells 8.3 and calcion. I literally dose 5 ml of calcium to almost 32 ml of alk which is crazy and I can’t get it up. Instant ocean salt water tests at about 11k dkh so I have started doing twice a week waterchanges. Here is my icp test. Let me know if the link doesn’t work. Thank you

That is sounds like very big money on dosing ! I was dosing No3 and Po4 , with DIY receipe...it didn't took me 400 ml per day ,but I guess that is because neonitro and neophos is not concrete enough...anyway ,your tank look awesome mate

The neonitro was really adding up and annoying because we have to keep ordering it- we have 4 systems now and where ripping through bottles of it . between shipping and the bottles themselves it was adding up.. so we decided to switch and make our own solution using sodium Nitrate ( see below pic) it is dirt cheap compared to neonitro LOL and last forever.

the solution we are currently using is 260 Gram of Sodium Nitrate per 1 Gallon of water. works like a charm!

Here's my Triton ICP results

Thanks for sharing your results. How is your tank currently looking? a few things I noticed..

1) The mag looks a little low at 1306. Are you getting this up?
2)Potassium is on the lower side i would suggest getting this up as well.
3)Strontium look good its a little high at 13. Are you doing this specifically how did it get to 13?
4)Molybdenum is low at 6.437. I would suggest getting this up to 12. You can buy the ICP suppliment for this and follow the ICP dosing Suggestion on the triton test.
5)Iodine is very very high over 120. IMO anything over 90 and it can hurt corals. Have you had any RTN Recently and how long has this been this high? when is the last time you did a triton test before this? are you dosing Iodine? how did it get so high?
6) your Barium is high how did it get this high?
7) Silicon is also high..

what are you dosing? are you dosing any all for one supplements like red sea ABCD ? or are you doing them individually?

I'd like to learn more about your experience with Benereef. It must be pretty effective at lowering nutrients if you used it to reduce your phosphates. I have a jar but have been reluctant to use it for fear of feeding some bubble and hair I've got going. Beautiful corals by the way!

Hey,

thanks for sharing your results. If the Iodine is not enough slowly increase it. Just be carful because you don't want to go over 90 Iodine and those ATI test take like 2-3 weeks so be careful you don't overdose it. The red sea iodine if you are using coral colors A also has a lot of other stuff in it. We used to use that but switched to seechem Reef Iodide which is much more concentrated. a few drops of the seechem product will work but the Red sea you may have to go like 10ML....

I don't know where the lithium is coming from and most people test high on lithium. the IO salt is high on alk that is why we don't use it. we keep alk at 8-8.5 and using the IO salt its hard to keep these levels. We prefer Tropic marine pro because the alk is around 7.5-8 so we dose the alk up as needed in our fresh salt water. We prefer this because we have more control.

FOr po4 we are still using the Neophose from Brightwell. we only dose it in one of our system like 20 ML every 3 days so not using that much.

our other tanks are holding po4 .06-.10 naturally with no dosing.
