HIGH END Tenuis Hoarder

Interesting observation on the MAG.....

I have never needed to dose mag as I use regular purple box IO and it's always in the 1500 range. That coupled with weekly WC's my mag has always been in the 1500 to 1600 range.

I have pretty much 0 coralline as my 3 urchins munch it down.

Might have to try dosing a bit as I'm currently looking into setting up a CalRX as I'm up to a gallon of 2 part every other week.

Wow @SBB Corals your acros are insane and your notes on how you care for them are helpful. One thing I’m wondering - a lot of the advice I’ve gotten has said to start lower on nutrients - 3-5 N and 0.05-0.08 P for newer tanks in the first year and then over time ramp up. When you were starting your frag tank/other tanks, did you start at lower nutrient levels as well or did you go straight to high nutrients?

I’m currently sitting at N 5-7, phos 0.05-0.09, alk 8.8-9.2 most days. My tank has only been running 3.5 months and is predominantly LPS and I just started adding SPS this past month slowly. Everything seems to be doing well overall with good polyp extension and color, including the SPS. That being said, if I can optimize my system to nutrient levels similar to yours and get things growing faster and brighter I’d love to try it out.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have.

we dose it right up to the levels we want. We just started a new 600 build. we cycled it for 3 months and then just dosed it right up to where we wanted it for n and p we would recommend dosing it up right away no reason to wait. Just don't overdose

Wow amazing news everyone we can now accurately test for iodine Follow this thread below its a game changer and works. We were sending in Triton ICP test every 2 weeks for 4 systems to test for iodine. This is going to save a lot of money LOL

also so you don't have to do the calculation every time you can follow the chart below to test for ranges. We have this now printed out and stapled to our wall LOL

@SBB Corals
Just to be clear, you're using the Nitrite LR checker to test for Iodine, right? Not the Hanna Iodine checker

I've been dosing about 50% of the recommended amount on the bottle of Brightwell Iodion for awhile now. Figure I should start testing for Iodine.

Yes...check out the link/thread they posted for the directions..uses the red sea a/B iodine regent. I need to get one of the checkers as well.

I better get one of these.... Remember above I said I've been dosing about 50% of the recommended amount of Iodion per week???
I sent in a Triton on Monday and already got the results back. Look at my Iodine! :flushed-face:

My corals have good PE, so I'm going to try to just relax, STOP dosing Iodide and do a 20% water change on Saturday.

What iodine are you dosing and how much? Lol

Brightwell Iodion at less than 50% off the recommended amount. The instructions do say to test to know what to dose, but I went off the general guidelines and cut it in half.
I've been dosing every Friday 2-caps (10ml) of Iodide into approximately 100-gallons of water.

My Iodine is always that high - never had an issue.

wow that is insane high. Do you have any torches, i think torches hate this iodine this high. IMO sps does also but over time they will not like it.

Please get it down to under 100 this new test with the hanna checker is perfect for you. I'm so glad you tested it. Do you have any other type of corals in your tank beside sps? Also make sure you bring it down slowly as the sps are not probably used to these high levels. So need to bring it down as slow as it went up

that is way to much LOL we do 5 drops in a heavy heavy stocked 540 Gallons.. i'm surprised you didn't really hurt the sps

glad you sent the triton ICP in, this is why we recommend every heavy SPS keeper send once in at least every 30 days.

what kind of salt are you using?

do you have other types of corals or only sps? ALso do you get new corals alot or mostly growing the current ones, i think corals are ok with the high iodine if they are slowly introduced to it.

Some people report no issue with it going over 100 but for us stuff gets finicky over 100 especially the zoas and LPS

I know, its literally off the chart high, not good! I sure do have a torch, one called the SBB Reverse Tiger Holy Grail Splatter:hushed-face: and LUCKILY it still looks amazing.

I'm going to get it under 100 slowly like you said, by stopping dosing and my usual every other week water changes. In addition to SPS and the torch, I have a SBB Care Bear Goni, which also is still looking good. My acros aren't as colorful as I'd like, but they still have good PE. I'm hoping by slowly getting the Iodine down to under 100, that my acros will get better color.

@SBB Corals Are you guys dosing Iodide? Or actual Iodine, like Lugols?

I'm so glad I sent the Triton in too. I've had the kit sitting on my desk, I almost decided to wait longer since my corals look pretty healthy. From now on I'm going to send these in more frequently, as you suggest. My last ICP before this one was over 6-months ago.

I use ESV Seawater system.
