High levels and time required to cause damage

Hi, just a,curious thought on damage caused in relation to high levels of a parameter. For examole, on a cycling tank with live rock and sand, the ammonia level goes above 1. Any thoughts on what time is needed before significant damage occurs?

We know that exposure over time leads to problems of course, but any thoughts as to a possible threshold of time.
