Hi,
Myself Imran from india.I have saltwater tank and I wish to keep corals .but I checked magnesium level is high 1800 .calcium 550. Kh 11. So I changed salt like fritz, aquaforest, blue treasures but all magnesium level is same so I changed test kit from selifert to aquaforest test kit.but all parameters is same as before.
So please let me know what should we do.we can keep corals in this parameters??

Welcome to R2R, we will need a little more info over your tank .. what size ? How long has it been running ? Has it cycled. What’s your salinity at ?? Temp ??. the more info you give the better !!
Magnesium that high won’t or shouldn’t be a problem in the short term ..
I use all saliferts tests ... with saliferts it’s important too know that when measuring the reagent in the syringe too 1 ml that the air bubble between then reads 8.5 .. sometimes it takes a few times sucking in and emptying the reagent back into bottle too achieve this . By doing this you will reduce the risk of error .!!
Also when adding the reagent too your test water keep adding till it doesn’t change anymore blue ...
Have you tried testing your pre mixed salt water before adding too tank too see what it mixes at ...
To be honest I think it might just be a test error rather than high ..
don’t panic there’s enough people on here too help solve this with you ..but yes you could keep corals in these parameters!
good luck

Mack

First off:
Welcome to Reef 2 Reef!!

From paying attention to forums, both those salt mixes are coming in at really high mag (as of late) and the AF QC spec. sheets are for mixing to .33ppt and not .35

Also, I really like the Salifert mag kit.

Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion for magnesium level.tank size is 5ft x 2ft x 1.5ft water capacity is 300 leters and it have been 1 years old saltwater(2 years freshwater old was same tank)octo reef protein skimmer IN 150 one big filter inbuilt sump and two wave maker jebao CP-25 cross flow.salitity .33pp
temp 25 c.
i have fish without any problems from last one years now i plan to keep soft corals. yes Kh is 11.

Thanks
Imran

Welcome to Reef2Reef :)

You mention that your salinity is 33 ppt? How are you measuring that? Are you using a refractometer? Have you calibrated it recently? It's possible that your salinity is a little high, which is skewing your magnesium a bit higher. But, this is unlikely to account for all the magnesium. Your magnesium is a third higher than it should be, so unless your salinity is close to 46 ppt, you likely just have really high magnesium.

The only real way to lower magnesium in a reef tank is to do water changes with a salt mix that has lower magnesium. Red Sea Blue Bucket is one of the more affordable options that has lower mineral levels. Last time I used it, magnesium was around 1,250 ppm. If you do 25% water changes, with 6 water changes your magnesium will be around 1,350 ppm. If you do 50% water changes, your magnesium will be around 1,350 after 3 changes.

Let us know if you have any more questions, and again, welcome :)

EDIT: also, what is your water source? If you are using tap water that has not been purified, it's possible that some minerals (magnesium, calcium, carbonate/bicarbonate) are coming in through your source water.
