New to saltwater testing, would you say that's 60ppm or 80ppm? Same test one pic with flash and the other no flash. Opinions appreciated. Recently husband and I decided to buy a full 100 gallon saltwater tank setup. Included small layer of live sand, 80lbs live rock, sump, skimmer, 3 fish, 5 hermits, and a couple snails. It's been setup up and running since 1/26/15 bought 40 lbs more sand for main tank. Bought miracle mud, chaetomorpha and dragons breath for a in sump refugium. Been doing a lot of 15% Water changes trying to fight high nitrates that began to kill snails, worried about hermits.

It looks closer to 80ppm to me. I'm colour blind though lol.
You'll probably need to bump water changes up closer to 40-50% or more to make much of a difference to the nitrate. Smaller water changes are good for regular maintenance, but larger ones are better for nutrient reduction and trace element replenishment in my opinion :)
I would also look at ammonia and nitrite. It's possible there was a mini cycle during the tank move.

First off a BIG WELCOME to R2R, nice to have you aboard.

Agree with Tyler above, a couple of larger percentage water changes and maybe some additional Macro for refugium. What is your feeding schedule like ? Is it possible that there is to much food going in ? Or, how long was Live Rock exposed or not in circulating water causing Sponges etc to die off.

Cheers, Todd

Thanks. We feed once a day and our tank did go through a mini cycle after the move. We had an initial ammonia spike but now nitrates are our only issue. Plan on buying more salt to do a larger water change today.

Here's our new 100 gal. It's in our bedroom and I'm in love!
