Hey fellow reefers,

my tank is a little over two years old and my Nitrites are going up!!! My parameters are as follows

PH 8.4
ALK 7.6
Salanity 1.025
Nitrates 3.27
Nitrites 0.035

these test were done yesterday roughly 24 hours ago. After a 30% water change my Nitrites are now 0.043.

now what do I do??? Thank you.

Mico Bacter XLM is great at reduction as is chemiPure Elite but with elite Monitor drops as it is capable of bringing levels to Zero. Too many recommendations though with chemical methods which I do not favor. There are many natural ways to reduce these levels safely and effectively.
Bio-pellet reactors are effective opposed to chemicals but best methods are simply performing regular water changes, reducing the amount of food that is fed daily and even rinsing the food or training it, reducing the number of fish in the system which produce waste, vacuuming sand bed and reducing detritus, turf scrubber, or skimming. Best range is 10-15ppm

I have a bottle of Bio Fuel by Brightwell and is a carbon source similar to Biopellets. Would this work?

Also I am checking my Nitrites by a Hanna Checker. My reading is 43 PPB

Make sure you check no less than 8 hours after water change as suspended matter will offer false readings

Not my first choice but should help

43 parts per billion is a tiny amount and definately not a problem. Interesting to see if others use this checker and what their numbers are. Most folks never check it after the cycle, some don’t even bother during the cycle.
Doing the math on the conversion it’s 0.043 which isn’t that high??

Nitrite in saltwater is not an issue. The nitrate reading in the presence of nitrite will be higher than the true value. You a mystery but no problem.

Since not many folks test for nitrites, there is not much data on often this occurs or why.

Yeah I was confused with his comments too… if your tank is established…. Why worry about nitrite…. Your nitrate is within acceptable range…. I wouldn’t worry about it… if you are concern you can always add microbacter 7 but again no worry’s

Wait - you said NitrItes? i thought Nitrates- if Nitrites Unless sky high like 160, ignore it as it applies to freshwater
