Our local reef club members are making contributions to help a local high school Marine Science Class have a mixed reef aquarium in their classroom. Members donated 30 gallon glass aquarium with stand and hood, T5HO lights, refugium, rock, water, skimmer, power heads and mechanical filter. Commitments have been received for plants, CUC, clown fish and coral to be added when tank is cycled. Project is beginning this weekend.

This is going to be a great but build to watch progress.

Could use some advice on this classroom project. Picked up this reef octopus BH-100 that was donated tonight. Between the skimmer and the refugium all of the space has been taken up on the back of display. With the hood in place there is no room for a HOB mechanical filter. Should I go without the mechanical filter, scrub the refugium, or keep the hood off and put the mechanical filter on the side of display? Install is Saturday and I am going to assemble and test in my garage tomorrow night with non-salt water to check for leaks. Your response is appreciated.

I have read this a couple times, I would leave the hood off

If it's going to be in a classroom, it might be a good idea to have a hood. Can you modify the hood so that everything fits?

Go Buckeyes!!

Congratulations you are up and running

Here we are at one month. Plenty of GHA startinig on the rocks. There was also some diatom on the sand at the end of the day. Ammonia has been zero for 2 weeks before we added livestock today. New Xenia and Toadstool thanks to Shannon at Fins and Skins. Dillon provided the juvenile clown pair. James at Bluewater Reef supplied the bubble tip and new T5 bulbs. Clean up crew was also provided by Fins and Skins. All of this was added over this past weekend. If you have advice about the GHA you can offer that, I am inclined to exercise a wait and see approach. There is chaeto in the refugium and would expect the green hair algae to decrease in time.
