Good evening..
Yesterday I posted about getting heavy diatoms again after it just cleared up. I just checked my ro make up water container and the tds was over 700!! I then checked the water coming out of the ro and it reads 2. So obviously, the new container (only got it from Amazon about 1-1/2 weeks ago) is leaching into the water. Now my question is what about the make up water that’s been going into my tank?

700 ppm TDS seems far, far too high for "leaching" from plastic.

That sounds more like something was in it. Any chance it has some residual salt in it?
It’s new. It’s just for make up water. It does seem very high though. Wonder if it sucked back some salt water.

That is a possibility.

Did you rinse it before use?

If the container you are talking about is the pictured one, I am virtually certain it did not truly leach 700 ppm TDS of anything into the water.

It may have had something in it before you got it (maybe from a customer that returned it, etc.).

If you don’t mind me asking what’s the reading on the TDS meter of the water coming out of your tap. If it’s below 700 I would rinse the container really good and fill it back up with the tap water. Either way if it’s leaching any contaminates into the water weather it being tap water or RO, you will see the spike. Then you would know that the container is no good. Why wait for it to fill up again drip by drip
If it is then I would run to your LFS, Pet Smart or Petco and buy some all ready made Salt water. They come in 5 gallon containers and then I would do a water change. Good Luck and keep us updated

I would be shocked out of my mind if it that turned out to be true, at least using the container shown above, but it is easy enough to do :)

700 ppm TDS means more than 15 grams of material dissolved in the water in that container. :)

Those containers are HDPE and shouldn't be leaching much of anything.
I can't see it leaching 700 TDS, as Randy pointed out.
There was probably something in the container... either some contaminate or by product from the manufacturing process or perhaps even some saltwater got in....

I'd rinse it out and fill it back up with RO and then test it again after letting it sit for a bit, but I doubt you will find high TDS again.

I've been using a couple of the same jugs for years and years and i've never measured any TDS in mine.

The container was purchased from a wine and beer brewing supply. Maybe someone made a batch of wine or beer and returned it but never really cleaned it out properly. That’s probably why he’s reading 700 ppm

Yes, that's certainly a reasonable possibility. :)

I will rinse it out and do the test. I thought there was something wrong with my TDS meter when I saw 700. I immediately went to my RO and tested 2. I went to my tapwater and it was 78. I went back to the jug and it read 700. I purposely got that jug because of the reviews. I guess I’ll stop making wine in it? Lol
