I get my fish from 2 LFS. One has 1.020 SG and the other has 1.026 SG(!).

I got most of my fish from the first store and my 2 year old system has 1.021. Water quality is always well kept.

The second store often stocks nice sub-adult Emperor Angels at a good price. They also have several adults for a long time. I have tried to acclimate 2 sub-adults to 1.021 SG with little success. They seemed to develope fin-rot( fins and tail turned whitish and edges rotting) in QT after a few days, even with daily 50% water change.

I reserched and found a few sites recommend SG in the higher range of 1.023 to 1.025. What do you guys think?

Depends on the type of tank you keep. Most stores will keep fish at a lower salinity. 1.019 -1.020 is fine for a FOWLR but problematic for a reef tank.

Thank you! I have no problems with other fish with 1.021 SG. Only the Flame Angel ( 6 months in tank)not looking too good with lighter color and fins seem to have shrinked.

As I mentioned, at this LFS that maintains the 1.026 SG, their Emperor Angels have been thriving. That got me thinking.........

If you have a QT you could set it to 1.026 & put the angel in it to see if it comes back or see if the LFS will take it back before it gets worse.

I'm slowly raising the SG while treating it with Furan 2. Both LFS would not take saltwater returns. It's the 3rd day of treatment and he shows some improvement. I'll target 1.024 and see.
