So, like a lot of things I'm finding in this hobby, opinions are divided. I have a Redsea 625 G2 (136 gallon). Is that big enough for a hippo tang?

If you got a tiny one you would be able to have it for a few years but that’s nowhere near large enough to house it for its entire life

So my opinion, I have a 125 gal tank and have had a hippo tang in it for almost 3 years. Got it when about 2 to 3 inches and now maybe about 9 or 10 inches. Starting to think I will rehome him after another year. For me it’s been more of nutrients levels big fish big poop. Lol

Gotcha. Just don't want a fish I will have to rehome due to size. I have... attachment issues, lol.

Depends, if he’s going to be the only “big” tang then I might try that.
This one spent 3 years in a 65 and now 2 years in a 160.
So in 5 years, just 7 inches now from 1”.

The answer is yes. Mine is 4.5" and very comfy in a 135g

As you say there will beany opinions on this one. I would lean towards yes, because i think it can be healthy and reach near its full size in that size tank.

Good luck finding someone to take it. :)

Already have one! Private seller who supplies tank maintenance companies with fish will be happy to take back any fish. Especially big ones! So guess I’m lucky

@Paul B may be able to help with this as I think he’s owned several Hippos.
Personally I would say it’s enough room as they don’t seem to get as big as people say.

It entirely depends on how much open space the 135 has. Here is an article I wrote that tries to make this a more objective determination:

Your 135 would probably fall a bit short, IF the hepatus reached its full adult size of 11". However, that is rare in captivity in home aquariums. If it maxed out at less than 8" (more likely) then it would be fine.

For those who don't know, a RSR625 is roughly a 5x2x2 tank.

I generally recommend somewhere in the 6' 180 range. Your tank looks pretty open. I've seen plenty of captive hippos get to the 10" range. I've also seen apparently healthy ones max out in the 7-8" range.
