I walked into my lfs to see the progression of a blue powder tang that they ordered for me. It’s a pet supply store, so saltwater is not their main thing. Okay well 2 tangs came in 2 weeks ago very thin. Today I saw that they got a hippo tang which I am now interested in. Upon closer inspection I saw that it had ich and what it looked like small bumps. I want to rescue it since they just lost over 20 fish over the weekend due to velvet. I just want to know if i can save it and know if anyone can say what those small bumps could be. Also it may have a fin infection as you can see on it’s tail
Thanks in advanced.

It looks like ich and velvet both to me. Which wouldn't be surprising.

Also if they are losing that many fish, it almost has to be velvet.

Also if their tanks are in close proximity and being a supply chain not specializing in SW fish I'd be surprised if they are able to prevent cross contamination.

The one with velvet is a good 30 feet or so away from the other tank. I believe their wholesale supplier is sending sick fish. The guy said it came in with ich, or velvet or whatever it is. They lost all but 3 fish in the tank with velvet over the weekend & they get their shipments in every thursday so you can make your guess...

30 ft away means nothing if the poeple caring for, maintaining, and feeding the tanks start with the infected tank.

I wouldn't be afraid of rescuing the hippo. If it's eating you have a great chance.

Take home.
5min FW dip.
60-90 min bath In Acriflavine (Ruby Reef rally)
Acclimate to a QT dosed with 1.0ppm copper power. Increase by .25ppm for next three days landing at total Cu level of 1.75ppm.

(Optional) I would dose Furan-2 and Kanaplex during copper treatment. With the coverage the fish has secondary bacterial infection is likely.

Keep in the therapuetic copper for 14 days and transfer to a second sterile QT clean up any bacterial issues with antibiotics (preferably NFG), and run 2 doses of prazi or GC.

The guy knows not to cross contaminate. He is not sharing equipment or just sticking his hand in both tanks. Like I said, their shipment came in and they put fish in both tanks. He runs copper where the hippo is but not the other as it contains anemones.

Are the small bumps caused by velvet or ich also?

I qt a hippo for a friend a few months ago. He got it covered in ich and barely breathing, also not eating. Didn't think I had time to ramp copper so fw dip then right into cp for 5 weeks slowly ramping the concentration from 40/mg per gallon to 80 on week 3 then week 4 and 5 In the 80. He made it thru beautifully. About 5 days I think before he started eating.

IMO It would be best to leave all fish in that tank and or system alone. As all are and will be infected. Treat with Copper. If they live after 72 days then maybe. There are plenty of healthy fish to be had.

The "bumps" may be something of a reaction to the copper medication - that's the hypothesis, anyway. It's been seen before.

It's doable, obviously you'll have to run your own QT protocol, and the one HotRocks has outlined for you is a very good one. He's very, very good at this game.

Brett newell, I'm surprised to hear your happy ending, as hippo tangs don't have a real good record with CP!
