History was made with the $24,999.99 fish!

I also wanted to give kudos to Kevin Kohen(?) and his staff for bringing this very difficult fish thru the process to a healthy and good ending. Many of these difficult fish do not make it no matter how much effort is expended. So I think they deserve some credit for their hard work. I would not have accepted this challenge, lol. Maybe says a little about their process at the Wisconsin facility.

Did y’all see a Peppermint Angelfish sold this evening on Live Aquaria for $24,999.99?

That just means a person has more dollars and sense. That's just stupid money.

EDITED UPDATE: Just read this fish is collected at a depth of 400-600ft. Dear Lord.... leave the little thing alone.

Acclimating it to reside in our manmade glassbox is even MORE STUPID than the money its selling for.

This is cruel and unusual punishment for this fish. We really need to look at our Hobby Addiction hard..... if we are doing this to animals to impress ourselves.

I would put this on the same category as those CRAZY GUYS who have Tigers and Lion Farms on their property. Or the CRAZY GUY who has 20 of the most dangerous snakes kept in a house. Smthg mentally-off with these people

Keeping and enjoying pets is one thing if it's in their natural environment wheelhouse...... but taking an animal and manipulating it for our own pleasure IS NOT RIGHT.

I'm not some looney P.E.T.A. person either. But enough is enough. Taking an Anglefish at 400ft and acclimating it using highly precise methods so it can maybe live a year or two in a 2ft deep glassbox is just madness.

You don't see me herding Mountain Lions in my backyard that sits 830ft above sealevel.... just sayin

For that price you could fly to the Cook Islands yourself, charter a boat and hire locals to capture about a dozen of these fish in there local water AND have a vacation doing it.
If you believe that, you should definitely go there and do that... a dozen ‘Peps’ could turn a nice profit!

i wonder if they used the coupon buy $199 and get a $50 giftcard from liveaquaria..

Kevin & LiveAquaria might have had a buyer before listIng it, they’ll probably get more in for sale. I was in the business for 30+ years, we would special order fish for customers, depending on availability, usually customer paid a deposit, 50% down, then ordered the fish if it was available, no guarantee because we wouldn’t order them because of ( survivability, rarity). This fish as of right now is only collected from 1 area on the planet & very deep. We used to get some pretty rare stuff in, talking to the collectors & wholesalers each week was like Xmas, almost something different each week. If more collectors(RVS Fishworld, Dynasty, etc, etc) establish collecting stations in that area, prices for the fish will go down. IMO

I remember back a few years ago when they were first discovered, they said the price was equal to the price of a new car. There was a guy on RC that had atleast one.
It seemed nuts then. But with prices for tiny nubs and booger sized frags going for hundreds or thousands, 25k for this fish doesn't surprise me.

So you are able to justify keeping marine fish in YOUR tiny glass box, but are passionate that someone shouldn’t be allowed to keep theirs?

It’s the same thing... doesn’t matter the depth it was collected from. It was acclimated to a lower pressure. Perhaps familiarize yourself with that; it is not “suffering” in his tank. Ever heard of scuba diving?

IMO you’re probably just bitter about the person’s budget . It’s an angel fish. It’s just expensive because it’s rare..... but in terms of ethics, it’s no different from keeping a different angel or tang.

Bitter? Aaaah no. I would NOT take the fish if it was given to me.

Dogs, cats, birds, fish are all kept as pets CAPTIVITYLY but its 90+% in their natural environment.

I have a 6ft 180g and wouldnt put more than two tangs in there if someone paid me. Not fair to the 3rd tang.

But what do I know, you have all the answers. Lol

So then we have to release every bird with clipped wings, every dog , cat, pot bellied pig, horse, on and on because NONE of them were born to be housed the way they are. A bird in a cage instead of the whole sky? A horse in a stable instead of roaming wild on the plains? It's called domestication. Because it was done hundreds of years ago to our "domestic" pets so we overlook and accept that? Why are fish any different? It doesn't change anything except point of view. I get your distaste at the idea as I sometimes struggle with the idea of keeping pets too but just want some perspective.

I don't think venting the swim bladder is cruel. You would be surprised how many of the fish in your tank had that done. Even fish from moderate depths of 80 feet where a lot of our fish come from have to have that done as I understand it.

We are squeamish about needles but in reality they inflict little to no pain for the most part.

Ok. I'm not here to argue. Had enough of that on RC with dudes with 12mos experience... but debate, yes.

ALL PETS are CAPTIVE against their will.... but it's only to their BENEFIT we keep them safe and heathly and fed... only IF IF IF caring for them is roughly in their natural habitat and has a great care provider

Theres a LINE when keeping pets. Taking a fish native to 400ft depths and comparing it to schooling Tangs at a depth of 40ft is a MAJOR DIFFERENCE.

What are the chances of this fish living after one year? 50%? Two years? 25% Three or more years? 20% More than 5 years? 10%

My fish are ALL over 5yrs old. One tang is nearing 8yrs old. I use common sense on what ti buy and how many

Again common sense has left the building on buying fish that dont do well in captivity

Theres a LFS that has a 20,000gal tank where they keep two Blacktip Sharks. It hard to watch them circle the tank in a continuous pattern. One has developed scars from rubbing up against the concrete walls. Theres no reason why these sharks should be held captive without the ultra professionalism of a ZooMaster and a more INTELLIGENT tank design

I'm a HUGE disbeliever in buying Flame Angels bc they don't do well in captivity AND they're caught using cyanide methods.

Also believe Achilles Tangs should be jeor bc they are HYPER and active swimmers and have a lower survivability level than most tangs.

My opinion. Yes my opinion, can you handle it? This fish not a wise choice given its native environment

I'd be surprised if that was the actual price the fish sold for, that's probably the Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price.

Still an expensive fish, but very nice looking too.

The ‘Manufacturer’ of that fish has never suggested a retail price!
