@Jay Hemdal

Jay, was hoping to get your thoughts on this tang and possibility of HLLE.

First I'll try to provide some info.

1. I usually only run Carbon once a month because I've been worried about hlle. These pictures were taken after running carbon for a whole week.

2. These pics were taken with no lights, only external lights from the room. With lights on, the tang looks fine.

3. I don't have a comparison to a time I wasn't running carbon, but I'm going to go back to no Carbon for a month and take pics.

Thoughts? Questions.

Carbon is in a reactor. Bituminous BRS I believe. I didn't buy it, it came used with the tank.

I’ve seen HLLE before and did suspect aggressive carbon use and/or poor rinsing and contributing…. for whatever reason discus, uaru (fw) and tangs seen sensitive to it….
could you back off for a while and use a resin type like Seachems stuff or the more rinsed/refined carbon based Chemipure?
…anecdotally speaking, you got a ground probe ?

I don’t see HLLE in the pictures, if it is there, it is just starting up. The white stripe lower down is common on scopas tangs and is normal.

Doesn’t look like it.

My purple tang had a severe case after an aggressive copper treatment and it ate away at his face too. Fed nori heavily and he healed about 95%. He’s fat, happy, and healthy. Has some facial scars but a wonderful animal.

Thank for the responses and help!

The color patterns in the pics are the scopas "night colors". They may also appear when he is stressed.
