Welp that is annoying. I wonder if it related to me switching fomr red sea carbon to rox
(rox is MUCH softer)

@Jay Hemdal has done some extensive research on the effects of Carbon on tangs and HLLE. See if he can weigh in.

I think it has developed in the last month or two. I use to use red sea carbon exclusively but switched to brs rox at the start of Fall. I had it in a bag but recently got a tiny reactor that it has been packed in. I recently went back to red sea carbon at the beginning of this month but I am pulling it out completely for now. I have seen the Hemdal and Odum (2011) paper on lignite carbon. What worries me about not using carbon is that my system is designed around minemal water changes (less than 5 gallons a month typically speaking). Without the carbon, I am not sure what else I can use other than potentially polyfilter. I have purigen but I need something that can remove impurities or potential toxins.

That does look like HLLE, but a picture taken under white light would help. I have not had any reports that ROX has caused issues, but using any carbon in a reactor increases the chances of it causing problems.

I'll try to get some pics when I get off work. The tang is rather shy when I put my phone up to the tank. The carbon in the reactor was packed so it shouldnt have tumbled but I did discover a few pieces of rox that may have grinded up (under a plate in the reactor). I did have some accidentally make it through the return pump at one point but id imagine that it would be harmless after a while. I am doing 5 or 10 gallons water change a day till I go through my tank volume to get any dust that could be lingering from carbon though I'd hope my 100 micron filter socks and dr tims clear up could do something (I am letting the socks get clogged to try and catch fine particles but carbon dust sounds like it would be very small.
