Hmmm 8ft or 6ft?

IDK...I am not sold on the in wall tanks. let the flaming start...lol yeah you might save $$ on not needing a good looking stand but you have to cut in to the wall ( not really that big of a deal ) but try selling that to the wife. then come the challenge of accessing the tank from the front . yes you will need this, its the #1 complaint from in wall owners. then come home resale value most ppl don't want a tank in the wall so you have to remove and repair the wall.

don't get me wrong its a cool idea if you have a complete fish room behind but its not fpr most folks IMHO.

if you are going to do an in wall I say go BIG and do a DIY plywood build in the 400-720 gallon. worth looking into anyway just so you can tell the wife you are going to have a monster tank but after a week or so drop it down to a simple 8 foot tank. haha
that my friend is how to get an 8 footer :D

I like to view the tank down its long sides it's a fun view for sure.

have you thought about a peninsula? now we are getting somewhere! or even a large cube-ish viewable from 3 sides? more options to think about.

but a tank against the wall is prob your best bet.

so I say 8 footer and be done.

So maybe a 96x24x25? However when she comes home, think I’m going to have take concessions and reduce it to 72x30x25 which would still be a good one.

This is a different question. I would have said 8 ft for sure if the other dimensions were the same. But I would take a 72x30x25 over a 96x24x25. Once you go with a wider tank, it’s hard to go back.

She said 8 foot tanks are for bachelors/single guys so that’s out lol and 30 inches wide is too big. 30 inches would be great to aquascape but it’s true the room is a little narrow. In walls are neat, but in the event we move and sell it’s easier to patch a couple return line holes versus a large wall.

She’s encouraging me now to get Planets 7 foot tank 215 gal 84.5x24.5x25 or do a 180 gallon 72x24.5x25.

Maybe I should get that extra foot of real estate from 6 feet to 7 feet since going more than 24.5inches width is somewhat exceeding a narrow family room? Room is 15 wide and 14 long. Tank will be on 14 long wall.

A 180 is a great size (i'm working from home and staring at my 180 peninsula right now). The 24in front to back isn't ideal for aquascaping, but it's not terrible. More space is always better, but you make do with what ya got.

Couple questions to help
1. Reef or Fish ONLY
getting flow to 8 ft can be difficult. I have (4) sea swirls (2 on return, 2 on closed loop) as well as (2) MP60's to have enough flow for an SPS tank.
2. what type of lighting?
If you are going to go with T5's or a fixture unit, most only come in 5-6 ft. If you place 2 together, they usually won't fit under the canopy because of where the cords are.

Couple things to think about. I have a 90" tank and I'm glad I went as big as I could.

Good Luck,

You're asking the drug addicts if they want more drugs?:D
You have the PVC model. Sleep on it and think about what you can handle. Here's something to think about.
If you're hanging a light fixture, a 6' tank or even 7' tank can be lit with a single 72" fixture. 8' tank will almost guaranteed to need two fixtures. Think about the wires.
6' can be managed by placing poweheads on one side of the tank. 8' will need pumps on both side of the tank. Again, wires.
Most freight carrier with lift gate can only handle up to 84" tank. an 96" tank will likely need to be picked up at the freight depot.
If these are not a problem to you, then go with what you can handle. You know your capability more than anyone else.

Ok I cut the mock up down to 7 feet long and 24 inches wide. Planning on fish only the first 6 months, LEDs possibly LED T5 hybrid, mostly LPS softies long term.

The only issue I have is the size of the tank for the room. Where it really should go is knocking out some of those shelves and cabinet on the left of the pic and fitting in a cube or something. Then it kind of blends in with the room.

Or at the very least the side of the tank facing outwards of the room is a no go zone for any cord whatsoever. It has to be super clean looking from that direction.
