I got a 10 gallon with plenty of rock and sand.. got a clown and a goby and gonna add another smal clown tommorow..been useing a hob filter with the carbon in it..do these filters do any good or can they cause more problems than they solve.. I've read that there a nitrite factory..if not what kind of skimmer would be good for my setup..I'm gonna add coral later which leads me to my next question.. does everybody supplemnt or do some of y'all just keep your parameters good and stay on top of water changes..if so what kind of maintenece would y'all follow..10 percent weekely, 25 percent monthly?..also back to the filter if it would be used what media would you use..I've read of putting chaeto in them and useing them like a refugium..its a clear housing so I would think the light from the aquariujm would be suffeient but idk..

I used a HOB filter for years and changed the filter every 2 weeks, never had a problem. Still use one on my quarentine tank. Personally, I wouldn't run a tank without a skimmer. Some of the nicest tanks on tank of the month threads are from people who don't supplement. As far as water changes, the more often you do them the more stable your parameters are going to be, especially in a small tank. I know of a fantastic SPS tank that the owner does 25% water changes per week and does not dose. I personally do about 15% a week on my SPS tank and don't dose. You could put chaeto in your HOB, but carbon is important too. Get a small HOB skimmer - you won't regret it.

I ran a 10G tank for over year with a 200gph HOB set-up. I only had purigen and floss it in too. Floss got changed every week and purigen was about every 2-3 weeks. I did however start running a Hydor Nano skimmer in it and that made a HUGE difference. I've never had such a clean tank. Only cleaned the glass once a week and I fed every other day. Had 4 fish in the with about 15 different corals. Great tank, miss it. As long as you do big enough water changes I think you'll be just fine. I did 3g a week on my 10g

I have a 7.5 gallon with a HOB filter. I run phosban in it to remove phosphates, and run floss inserts changed every two weeks. I do a weekly waterchange, 10% and like the other guys said, I run a protein skimmer. I had High nitrates on it before I added the PS. I just use the cheap $30 Biocube one and it's enough for what I need from it.
