HOB filter for 30g

I'm currently not running any sort of filter or protien skimmer on my 30g. I'm planning on upgrading to a 90g in the summer and looking for a temporary solution until then and don't want to spend too much money on a protien skimmer until I upgrade. So I'm wondering if there are any hob filters that anyone can recommend. I'm also curious, since using a pad filter can cause the nitrates to rise, do you just substitute the pad filter? If so what to use? TIA

I would use the new seachem tide filters. They are made more for saltwater use.
