How many people run a HOB filter for a reef tank? I have one running that all it has is a bag of active carbon in it? Should I let this run 24/7? I also run filter floss in it and I usually change that about 1x week just curious to everyone elses routines.

I have run several tanks with HOB filters. I just run carbon and floss as well. No problem running it 24/7.

I typically do once a week. It really depends on how fast it clogs and if nutrients are an issue in your tank. BRS did a study that showed filter socks are most effective at removing nutrients if changed every 3-4 days.

I usually change mine weekly or depending on how it looks to be honest.

Mine is sumpless.
In my sumped tank 3-4 days is as long as. Sock lasts

As long as you have enough rock for biological filtration then you should be good.

You can even add a sponge filter to the intake, this will drastically cut down on the floss needed.

What type of filter is it?

Seachem Tidal Filter.

Seachem Tidal Filter.
That's a pretty good filter.

I would get a sponge for the intake, double the foam insider, and either pack it with matrix or similar media, and then floss on top.

How big is the tank? Probably don't need carbon if you're keeping a good water change schedule.

75 gallon and I do weekly 10 gallon water changes.
