i do not have the money or space for a sump. can i use my two unused HOB filters in a reef tank as filtration

The HOB filters are goin to give you problems whith nitite

all you need is a hob skimmer, powerheads, and live rock. even the skimmer is not a must, but will keep your tank healthier. you can use one of the filters to run some carbon on occasion, but they must be cleaned often.

I have a Aquaclear 110 running with chemi-pure on 29g and no issues; no skimmer.

Yes, you can use HOB filters without any issues, as long as you keep them clean. By filtration, I assuming you mean chemical/mechanical filtration, not biological?

Agreed.

I would run them without mechanical filtration (pads, floss, etc) just so I didn't have (yet another) weekly task to perform. Honestly, I'd run them empty until I had a need for carbon/GFO/fuge space or whatever....I typically don't need any of that filtration mess, but I would still like that extra flow!!!
