Looking to start a 40 gallon FOWLR TANK.

My question is I don't want to do a sumo to start off. So I have been looking in to the following HOB Protein Skimmer.

Reef Octopus classic 100 HOB Protein Skimmer

Just want to see what people though about it? Also with this do I still need to have another filtration device such as a HOB Power Filter? Such as a aqua clear 70 HOB power filter.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi I did the same thing when I started out. I thought there was no need for a sump so I got the Eshopps HOB skimmer. I liked it a lot and it worked great. You need to be careful though because that's another thing that can fail and make a huge mess since its hanging on the side of the tank. If I were you I would think about a sump because I eventually decided I wanted 1 and was stuck with the HOB skimmer. But if you stay with the sumpless, I really like Eshopps. I hop this helps...Here's a video I made a while back where I talk about the skimmer. I was a total newbie!!!

Thanks so you just have the Protein Skimmer runner and no other type of filtration in the tank. Such and a power filter?

That's correct. Your live rock and skimmer are your main filtration along with good water flow. If you look at my other videos you'll see I got rid of the canister filter. All I run is live rock and skimmer.

Seeing as you are just wanting a FOWLR, a protein skimmer may not even be a necessity. Most fish aren't as sensitive as coral when it comes to water quality. Of course they still need clean water, but with that size of tank you should be able to accomplish that with water changes alone (if the tank isn't too heavily stocked). Going with an aquaclear isn't a bad choice either. This will give you the choice of running mechanical and chemical filtration if need be! If you are dead set on having a skimmer, I loved my RO 100 (the one you're asking about). Only problem I ever had with it was operator error where I didn't secure the collection cup enough and it slid down causing it to overflow.
