So I am hoping to add a mandarin to my 20 gallon display. I would be adding it in a few months so i can prepare and raise enough food. I will be adding more live rock btw. So I was wondering, is a HOB refugium a good idea for raising copepods? I don't have enough space for a completely seperate setup. Would it work for keeping a mandarin in the long run? Thanks @ReefSquad

I would not add a mandarin to a 20g. I just feel that you need to not only have pods in a refugium/sump to replenish what is predated upon in the display, but enough room in the display for mandarin to not be able to decimate the entire display's population too quickly.

You would likely still have to supplement, it can clean out that tank pretty fast. I believe a captive bred specimen would be worth the money, as they will be better suited and eat prepared foods.
Yeah i was thinking about ordering a captive bred one so it will eat frozen foods.
