Hob refugium for 40-55g tank

Title says it all. Is a hob refugium really gonna do much in a 40-55g tank?

Yes if you want to cut back on water changes for nitrate or phosphate (make sure to get a proper light if you do). If you arent having problems with those being kept in check with water changes then it is a good option. Check out fiji cube or cpr for brands. CPR is much more expensive though.
