HOB refugium

Has anyone ever used a 50-70 gallon filter and turned it into a HOB refugium for a 10-20 gallon tank? Or any other tank? I’m starting a new build and would love to and tips or tricks you’ve learned from have one on your tank. Thanks.

I’m glad you posted that. I’m currently do that exact build. Lol. And I wanted at get a third party opinion on it. I’ll be setting my 10 gallon nano tank with in the month.

I have a penguin 350 on my 20 gallon long that works well. My only suggestions would be to remove the wheels/pads and to fit some eggcrate so the cheato doesn't float back to the display.

Of course. I’ll Can tell you what I’m gonna do. With a HOB filter there is a long tube that extends to the bottom of the tank and sucks up the water which everyone knows. I don’t want it sucking up fish, corals, inverts, or anything at all. So I have bought some 1/8” plexiglass and I’m going to box it off and silicon it so the water will flow over the box and BOOM! Overflow which has so many Pros then a regular bottom of the tank filter thing.

Great! I just picked up a aqua clear 50 for my 10 gallon. I’d love to see a picture of your refugium and would also love to hear some knowledge you learned from have one.

How's the flow? I have an AC70 on my 20 long and I feel like if I went to the 110 I might be blowing water off the other side. Do you run it peninsula style?

The flow is great. I have two different hob filters on the back wall.
I've got a pic somewhere. I will post it if I can find it.

Awesome. I just posted a thread a few minutes ago about nutrient export and converting my AC70 to a refuguim with the In-Tank media basket, but now you've got me considering going to the 110.

I was thinking about doing this. But would be too small for my tank for nutrient export. I was looking at the aquamaxx. And also that same light only the 24w version
