What is the General senses on hang on the back refugium? I am liking the idea! How big of a refugium is needed for a 40? How much weight can a 40 breeder hold with hob equipment?

Maybe I"m completely wrong on this, but I feel like I have read that it's hard to have a HOB refugium that actually exports enough nutrients to be helpful. Maybe not...but I think about the size of the refugium I had in my sump (and it seemed small), and it would still be too big to hang off the tank.

These are a few hob options I am interested in. I know one is not a refugium but could go a different option!

If a sump is not possible a HOB fuge is not a bad idea at all. In fact it will be benifical. It will add water volume, be a safe zone for pods to grow and the macro algae will remove at least some nutrient ps from the water. I used one a 55g a long time ago and it had a built in skimmer that was crappy but did ok. The biggest HOB fube you can fit is the way to go. If you can fit the large fuge from CPR you probably wont even need a skimmer when paired with water changes. A good light is important if you are using the fuge as a primary method of nutrient export.

I am not able to have a sump currently. I would rather do it correctly. Most importantly I want to be in a house of my own and not rent. I also think I would rather have a pre-drilled tank also. Not a hob overflow.

Yup nvm. I was thinking about the DIY ones people make out of a HOB filter. Those look much bigger lol.
I definitely am not one for diy projects. I saw aqua clear 110 turned into a refugium. My luck I spend 85 dollars and mess it up.
