I'm thinking of getting an HOB skimmer for one of my sump-less tanks. Not much experience with HOB skimmers and my first question is how to keep the collection cup from overflowing onto the floor.
Are there safeguards in the design of these units to keep this from happening? Or is this something I have to be actively mindful of all the time?

You can add a sensor with a kill switch to the power.

I have only owned one and it works great. The safeguard is a tube that drains the cup back into the skimmer body if it gets too full. Really liked this one. Worked great with almost no break-in time but I am sure there are others. Best of luck!
