I know there are pluses and minuses with all brands and that some seem to always rise to the top for reliability which results in popularity. But I'm wondering which HOB's have solid built in safety features to keep from flooding if something goes wrong. I can find tons of info on which people recommend but I can't seem to find any on built in safety or redundancies. I've seen many threads about leaking units and I know even with safety features this can happen but I like to minimize risk whenever possible. Hence why I'm looking at a HOB instead of drilling my tank for a overflow. Thanks for all the help.

I cannot speak from personal experience, I have only ever used internal skimmers, but anything made by Tunze is a quality product. They have been around forever, and offer some of the best qualify stuff out there so might want to give them a look. I used their Auto-top off on a previous tank, and there were safety features and all the bells and whistles one could ask for.

I don’t know of any HOB skimmer that has built in safety features however you could install a cut off float switch to prevent overflows of the collection cup which would be the most likely cause of flooding.

If it can, it will flood.

I like big sumps on small tanks for safety, but no matter what safety designs are put into a system, I’ve always found a way to outsmart the designer an flood the floor anyhow.

Inspite of me, I had a Ramora Aqua C that I used for at least a year without any flooding incidents.

In the years I’ve been in R2r I don’t recall anyone reporting a problem with an overflow.

On occasion the cup may during break in. But there’s no safety for that save a tube and cup rig. A secondary container. Mostly used so you don’t have to dump the cup so often.

That is a pretty great selling feature. I'll have to look into them .
