Hey everyone, I'm sure this topic has been beat into the ground but i tried searching and could not find the exact topic i was looking for!! I have a 20 Long, was interested in getting a HOB skimmer to help clean up been having some green algae war and gotten a lot better over the past couple months and i think the skimmer will finally put this battle to rest. Any thought on brands i don't run a sump nor do i have the room to install one, so the brands i'm looking at are the Aqua C Remora and the Reef Octopus. ? any guidance from anyone would be like awesome!!

PS
Really like this Forum had a lot of stuff answered off of it!!

hey i recently sold my HOB skimmer (moved to a sump setup) but I have used over 7 brands of HOB skimmers over the years and will recommend Aquamaxx HOB-1 skimmer. It is fantastic, and Has performed extremely well for me for years. Reef octopus is good as well, and would be my second choice but without doubt will recommend the HOB-1 by aquamaxx (check out marine depot). Personally think it looks nice (the blue acrylic etc) but its the performance that makes me recommend it for you.

I've had the Aqua maxx hob for about 3 weeks and up to last week I had no complaints. I have the one with the sponge to minimize micro bubbles. All of a sudden it started over flowing on to the floor, cleaned and made adjustments still doing it. Called marine depot , they said it needs to break in yada yada, why would it do it when it first started up not 3 weeks later. Plan to return but I would buy it again sabot was doing a great job. But if you get one make sure it has the bubble minimizer.

Need to be careful using sponge on it.... I would say that it overflowed due to the sponge "clogging up". I personally took mine off as you need to clean that sponge every few days, otherwise you create back pressure which will cause the water level to rise, possibly overflowing. Also you need to clean the venturi (plug where yellow airline tubing goes into pump) regularly to ensure calcium build up didn't plug that up. I cleaned the pump in general every 3 months and never had an issue with overflows.

Keep in mind ALL Hob skimmers can overflow, that is the negative of them compared to in sump. However @Chrisfish I believe if you read my response above it would allow your skimmer to be used again. let me know, or shoot me a pm if you need any more help with it. Ran the older version for 5 years and the newer one for a solid year. Thanks
