anbody using a sump with the hob overflow. Would like to hear to pros or cons. I'm using 2 hop filters and hob skimmer at the moment. Is it worth the cost?

I don't use a hob overflow but I know that you need to watch out if the siphon breaks...it could lead to flooding.

I think the ishopps or whatever I was looking at had a non stop siphon , even if the power goes out

Im close to three years on an eshopps overflow. I've never lost siphon unless it was my fault for fiddling with it.

The biggest advantage to sumping is the sump is a gravity filter, solids go down and its hard for them to come up., and you can use different skimmers and mechanical filtration(socks etc), and add a refugium etc.

If your into reefing, it's the next level. That cost is up to you really.

The Refugium is one of the main reasons I'm thinking about getting one, plus to hide my heaters, etc. Can a hob skimmer be modified to use with the sump?

itll fit if you plan it right, I started mine with a hob skimmer. But I would bet a dollar you'll look for another skimmer, addict;). So plan a bit for that.

My stand fit a 30 tall perfectly and I have that now. I started with a 20 long. and the skimmer hung off the side.

Thats sounds cool, I've never heard of it. Do you know how it works?
It's just a tube.
As water pressure increases in the prefilter weir it pushes it over the top.
I'm honestly not sure why the cpr style needs the lifter pump to keep the siphon. I think it has a larger volume of water so needs more pressure and that can't be maintained at low turnovers way under the reccomended gph of the overflow.

That's another thing to consider when choosing the overflow btw. It kinda closely matches the return rate in gph.

You can make a HOB overflow with $20 of pvc.

The sump can be a $10 storage container.

Whatever you do make these adjustments/tests.

1) insure with power out you get no floods. (I forgot about back syphon on the pumped return lines and had to add small holes above the waterline to break that syphon.
2) insure normal operation returns when the power comes back.
3) insure with drain failure (syphon break, blockage, etc) the sump runs out of water before the upper container (usually the display) floods.
