Morning reef fam!

Over the last year, life got busy. I let my reef go mostly unattended beyond monthly WCs. As such, GHA grew rampant. Now I’m catching up, got my params where I want them and manually removing the GHA daily. Yesterday I cleaned my back wall, which caused a ton of GHA to float around the tank and some got on my corals (LPS and SPS). I had an old HOB from my younger reefing days and thought it might be worth it to fill it with filter floss and stir up the water column to help with some
mechanical filtration to help get the GHA particles out of the water.

Has anyone had any experience like this? Did it work for you? Seems like a no brainer, but I also wanted to make sure that I’m not doing something dumb.

I don’t think it will hurt to temporarily add a hang on back filter. As long as you don’t leave it too long and clean out the media you shouldn’t experience any issues.

Did you try using a (fish) net? When I had hair algae and removed it manually, I would clean up with a small fish net.

I used the net just as a way to hold the algae till I could dump it. Did you just use it to catch the large pieces or did you do it another way?

I used the net to catch the loose algae in the tank after I picked it off the rock .. this also works for bubble algae, which I also find annoying
