Hey guys-

Does anyone have any information on this topic? I am looking for DEATILED information about homeostasis amoung corals aswell as any information relating to the way corals control themselves.

Thanks,
Austin

They really cant do much, considering sps is just a thin layer covering a calcium carbonate skeleton, and soft corals are mush. Lps like open brain corals seem large enough though.

Everything has to maintain homeostasis to a certian level. Im looking for articals on this...I know they do it as all living things do, according to the study of life all living things do, which corals are living...so yes!lol

Cold blooded animals rely on their environment for homeostasis, and die without the proper environment. To me that means little or no ability to maintain homeostasis, although most would disagree. I am also interested in how corals may do this.

I agree and disagree with you. We as humans maintain homeostasis in our bodies but yet if something from the environment is off wack and enters us we go out of homeostasis. I would figure corals are the same, just different lol.

As you said yourself, I disagree.

But oh well, I will find this out...lol

If I find out, Ill repost for you.

they rely on environmental temp to help regulate body temp, but as far as everything else goes they have different glands and centers in their brains for homeostasis.

I am still looking for much more deatiled information, Im just not sure where to start...

Here's a PhD dissertation that deals some with calcium homeostasis in corals: http://eprints.jcu.edu.au/8084/3/01whole.pdf. You'll probably have to search places like jstor and elsevier for scholarly articles and pay for them individually. I'm not finding much on the web. Also try "anthozoan homeostasis.". Corals are anthozoans and should behave similarly to others as well.

Hey Austin! I think the first consideration should be proper acclimation to the captive environment. Once the coral is able to cope with captive conditions its just a matter of the captive husbandry. In order to maintain metabolic equilibrium it must be necessary for the aquarium keeper to import and export nutrients and elements properly. If the captive environment is kept stable and healthy enough by the keeper and the coral is acclimated properly it seems possible for homeostasis. Different corals have different requirements so its seems difficult to give one correct answer about homeostasis among corals.

Hell I could write a thesis if half the pages I used were tables, pics, and references lol. I think he probably got off easy with that thesis.

You should probably look up on google scholar or some other scientific article search engine... just write in what your looking for and you can find and tons of excellent articles, studies and thesis. Those will probably get into the most detail possible:wink:
