So, I want to apologize upfront because this post/question is probably going to be fairly scattered, but I will do my best organize my thoughts so they make as much sense as possible. Quick bit of background: I restarted my 150 gallon SPS display tank about six weeks ago after a series of failures over the previous 2 1/2 years with the same setup. Over the course of those 2 1/2 years, I dealt with dinoflagelate issues, cyanobacteria issues, low PO4, but very high NO3 issues, etc. I ended up trying Zeovit, Red Sea NO3PO4X, biopellets, and macro algae, but it just seemed like the more I tried, the worse things got. So, anyway, came to the conclusion that I might be better off with a fresh start, and began that process about six weeks ago.
The restart consisted of getting rid of all of the rock and sand, and adding back in 150 pounds of amazing, fresh, live rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater, and an additional 100 pounds of live sand (this provides a 1" - 2" sand bed). My thought process was to abandon all liquid carbon dosing, biopellets, etc, and buy the best quality live rock I could find, run a big skimmer, have good lights, and just take things very slowly, hoping that the rock and sand would be able to take care of the majority of nutrient issues - kind of a return to how tanks were run 10-15 years ago when I was first getting into the hobby. I am currently running the tank with no fish, which is part of my plan of allowing the micro fauna in the tank to take hold free from predators, and plan to keep the tank fish free until the end of the summer (which will be between 4-5 months from when the rock was added to the tank). I am taking a thawed piece of raw shrimp and cutting it into small pieces to feed the various serpent stars, anemones that came with the live rock, etc, twice each week (target feeding, not broadcast feeding).
The tank moved through the initial cycle of Ammonia and Nitrite in about 10 days, which is what I was told to expect by the live rock supplier, at which time NO3 was north of 50, and PO4 was approx. 0.57 (175 ppb). I have used about a cup of GFO, changing out weekly, and this level has slowly dropped over the past three weeks to 0.03 (12 ppb) as of last night, but the NO3 numbers are still above 50 (Red Sea and Salifert test kits). I have been assuming that the NO3 numbers would begin to drop as denitrifying bacteria began to reproduce in the system, but maybe I am wrong? I'm kind of embarrassed, because this isn't my first tank, but is the first non "system" tank like Zeovit, etc, that I have started in a very long time. I did get a few five dollar Montipora frags that I have in the tank that have actually been growing nicely, and showing nice color, kind of to my amazement with NO3 numbers being so high.
With that out of the way, I feel that I have a good filtration system in place: I have a 30" Venturi skimmer (again, return to the old-school), filter socks that are changed every other day, 8 liters of Seachem Matrix in a low flow area of the sump, in a slotted basket, plus the 150 pounds of live rock and the sand. I am also doing 10% water changes each week. I also keep a media bag in the sump with 1 cup of GAC, and have GFO available to run in a reactor. It was my original hope that this would be enough to keep NO3 and PO4 numbers on the low end (not looking for ULNS numbers, just +/- 5 NO3 and >.05 PO4). Does this seem possible, long term? Should I just keep doing what I am doing hoping that these nutrient levels will fall into place in time? If not, and this plan can't keep my nutrient numbers down without help, I guess I need to consider some additional filtration?
Because I am limited with the usable space in and around the tank, a large macro refugium is out (would be my first choice, sticking with my "old school" approach). Here are the other options I am considering:
1. ATS scrubber - seems to be closest to a macro refugium but without the space issue?
2. Carbon dosing - this goes against my original plan, but maybe a milder form such as Prodibio?
3. Sulfer Denitrator - in conjunction with GFO reactor?
So, at this point, are there any opinions on how to move forward? My primary concern is that I don't want to end up in a position when I am jumping around between various nutrient reduction methods, doing "A" one week, then having issues and switching to "B" the next week. This is what went wrong with my last set-up, and what I am desperately trying to avoid this time around - want to keep things as simple as possible, and want to come up with a solid, long term plan that I can stick with.
