This week has been horrible for reef keeping. I lost 2 of my favorite montis, i'm pretty sure my solon wrasse has a back injury and my main return pump failed again. I need help.... ;Sorry
  1. My water has been cloudy on my DT and clear in my FT= difference I run chemipure on my FT. Should I run carbon on the DT?
  2. Since I am not running anything but my protein skimmer, I feel like the carbon would make the difference, hence montis dying
  3. I noticed this morning a few scales missing and he ate, he has been laying on the bottom for the past 10 mins and is only swimming vertically up.
  4. Money is tight right now since I am a student and I'm squeezing the life out of this pump.

@AndysReef Can you upload a video of the wrasse showing it's swimming behavior? It sounds like a spinal injury, but a swim bladder disorder is also prevalent with wrasses.

I will try to get one in the a.m. he likes to sleep in a "my made cave" on the rock work, and you can only see his tail.

Where's you water pramameters at?

Was the return pump off long? If it's still down, do you have a air pump?

Cost of return pumps isn't cheap, but having a equal back up is a good idea.

Sorry your having a tough time now. Hang in there!

SG 1.025 No3 5ppm Po4 0 Calcium 480 dKH 11. I turn off the pump do my maintenance then try to flip the switch on nothing. I have a 1000L per hour powerhead for my acros that I bought for $10. I leave the return off for a half an hour and then it turns back on again.

Have you pulled the return pump to examjne it? Or possibly just turn power to it on, pull it up out of the water, tap on it till it starts spinning the impeller, then lower back down into the water. Most of the time a pump that's becoming problematic will start back up this way. It may keep acting that way every time you shut it down though.

I use a really old pump from a red sea berlin skimmer for my transfer pump at water change time, and I have to jar it while out of water to get it spinning every time I use it. Been like that for years though and still moves water from mixing tub to sump...

If you pull the pump apart though, you may find a bad impeller or precipitate buildup, either btwn impeller and shaft, or impeller and housing. It's worth a look.

I did examine it the first time it happened, cleaned it out, cleaned the pipe. I took it out of the water and tried to power it and nothing happened. I did not see build up in the impeller.

It won’t let me upload the video.... I think the file is too big.
