if i have to setup a ht and i haven't put any extra bio media in my filter to seed it with, how much bio media can i take out of dt if i replace with fresh? It's a 10g hospital tank so would a couple bio balls and ceramic media be enough?

Unfortunately it is impossible to tell.....depends on too many variables such as stocking levels, amount of food, frequency of HT water changes, etc. I would start with a few bioballs and keep testing.

That was enough for me when I started one for a couple small fish.
What will you be putting in the tank?

I've always had the opposite effect even though it does not make sense to me.
At times I have had extra ceramic rings in a mesh bag seeding in my DT's sump for a month plus, or I have taken out established Marine Pure balls out of the DT's sump to setup a hospital tank and still the ammonia elevates after a few days in the HT.

Thats the problem I'm having. I first used dt water and ammonia was up the next day. Then I got some dt water from lfs and after a day it was up.

And i also did a 25% waterchange and it still was high

I need to get my 2 clowns in there. My meds got lost in the mail so I had to reorder but if I can't keep ammonia down it won't do me any good.

Which test are you using for NH3?
What is your level?
Did you dose ammonia?

I don't understand why if I take water from my dt or lfs dt and put it in another tank thats empty and the ammonia goes up like that and it doesn't go down after a 25% water change
