I had read somewhere that using aerosol cleaners in the house with a reef tank is a big no no. This made me wonder what other household cleaners are not safe to use in the vicinity of the aquarium, obviously not on or in the aquarium. In addition, my wife is single handedly keeping bath and body works in business and always has fragrant candles burning and an air freshener in every room.

just anything antibacterial that can damage your biofilter and you would have to be spraying it in to the tank in order for it to cause noticeable damage. It also depends on water volume. A 1 gallon tank may be more sensitive than 180 that would shrug off a person swimming in it daily.
Same with sticking your hand in the tank. Sanitizer, lotions, antibacterial soap residue can potentially cause some damage in a small water volume.

The word AEROSOL covers pretty much all hazards around reef tank. The mist can travel up to 16 feet

Im only speaking only from my own experience....recently my husky got skunked...again...I have experience from last year when he got skunked....I let him inside not realizing it until it was too late...the house reeked and I used febreeze, areosol air fresheners and a mix of deodorizing sprays on the couches by the tank with the ceiling fan running atleast A dozen times a day for a week, 2 of the couches are right next to my tank which has no hood and is open...I also sprayed it liberally in the same room....and the entire house received the treatment...I got the skunk Smell out..I still have one of those auto air fresheners that spray a mist every few minutes running about 10 feet from the tank and the ceiling fan has been running 24/7....that was Over a month ago.
I decided it was a gamble worth taking and I haven’t noticed any negative affects on my tank.
