I want to use ammonia for my cycling as I don’t get the feeling the ghost feeding is the best way. I know a lot of you use Drtim’s ammonia but I cant get it where I live. I saw people cycling with household ammonia (without soap). My local supermarket has anmonia 5% without soap in it. What do I need to know before buying a bottle?

I and many others use pure ammonia as well. Just be sure no soaps or additives.

No “Lemon scent” or other smell

Alright thanks, the one I’ve bought is ok then. It certainly has no lemon scent haha.

Sounds like you bought the right stuff, no scents no surfactants. Give the bottle a good shake to double check for the surfactants, if it foams and bubbles don’t disappear right away you won’t want to use it.

Go slow when dosing it, a little goes a long way. I like to bring it to 1.5-2.5 of ammonia to start a cycle. The exact level does not matter much in my opinion, as long as your close to that range.

Surfactant! I couldn’t remember that word.

Google search ammonia dosing and you will find calculators

It doesn’t foam so that’s good. Only downside is that the bottle says: 1-5% ammonia. I added 4ml and my ammonia alert displays +/- 0.3

I would calibrate my dosage, add 1 ml to a gallon of water and test your ammonia.
Thats a good idea if you are dealing with an uncertain concentration of ammonia

I used ammonia from the hardware store to cycle my tank and it was very successful. My only issue is that I now have a 95% full bottle of ammonia left over, LOL.

Lol it’s not a big deal I’ve paid 59 cents for 1 liter
