How’s your Fish growth?

Curious on others experience with fish growth.
I’ve been in the hobby a couple decades and have never really seen fish growth. I feed my fish decently and usually get grazers. Currently have 4 rabbits and 5 tangs a few genus over a year in a 240/210g tank. Plus some wrasses and randoms.
However over the years I’ve never really seen my fish grow in general. Maybe I don’t feed enough? They eat 2x by auto feeder NLS and fresh pycine mysis, fish frenzy, and a fair bit of nori once a day minimum.

I have this one guttatas rabbit fish that has tripled in size 3 to 7” in 7 months. It’s amazing. But no others have noticeable changes including a blonde Naso who is still about 5” over 18 months.

I feed large portions of frozen food from my LFS twice a day. The fish and inverts grow quickly but don’t eat the coals.

I have somewhat similar experience, but not quite the same. My yellow and powder brown Tangs were growing very slowly. I had them for 8 years or so, so I didn't really notice. They are very active and now probably utilize most of the food for energy. My Clown Fish are humongous, they definitely gained weight and size. My newest addition-longnose hawkfish also increased in size during 2 months stay with me. I guess LFS was a bit skimpy with food for him. My 2 Talbot Damsels are also growing.
I feed once, twice a day variety of foods, mostly frozen, but also pellets and nori. Tangs are also nibbling on the rocks.

Often you don’t notice growth until you look at previous photos of when you first got them.

Also, the Naso genus of tangs is a much slower growing genus than other tangs so it doesn’t surprise me that yours is only 5”.

What are you feeding and how often? Any insights into fish that grow more than others?

What brand of food do you all use? Those who have good fish growth. I have had a 300gallon tank that came with my house. I’ve had a guy that has helped but am looking to take it over myself. I am feeding 1-2 cubes a day as that’s why the local guys have all said but my fish aren’t growing. I’m open to suggestions

My rabbit fish and hyppo tang , grew fast and got to their current size in less than a year. The rabbit, now 8 years, stopped growing an so did the hippo ( 3,5 years) as he remains slightly smaller than the rabbit.
But I never saw my Eibli angel grow nor my six line. Either they were adults when i got them, or they grew so little and so slowly that I did not notice. My green chromis grew some, especially the males. female have remained small.
In my other tank, one pajama cardinal grew, but the other did not though he seems to eat more than his mate, but is somewhat bullied by the other.
Firefish grew a little, but the scissor tail dartfish grew very fast, They were almost transparent when I got them, an are now much bigger than the firefish, though they were the last added, about 6 months ago.

I've see knoticed my benghai Cardinal has grown massive compared to others. Clown, firefish, midas blenny, watchman goby and a few others

With fish growth, you rarely notice it unless you look at photos from the past (Generally around the time you got the fish).
You also want to add Algae to their diet as the tang and Angel are not strictly carnivorous and thrive with algae. Do you have any other fish in the tank?
Another thing you’ll want to try is feeding more than once a day. Feeding once a day will work if you feed a nutritional diet however feeding twice a day (some even feed 3-4 times a day) would be best.

- Veggies
- Algae
- Cockel
- Muscel
- Varied Pellets

got my hippo tang a year ago today
was small enough to fit on my finger tip when i got it (smaller than a half dollar coin) and now i’d say it’s about 4” and doing really well
frozen mysis daily, tons of algae foods i rotate out, and bunches of macro here and there

Only 12 fish in a 100g? I'm about to have like 20.. makes me feel overstocked

My oldest fish I've had for 9 months. Melanarus wrasse is getting big and my 2 clowns have grown quite a bit. Fish I've had for less time have all grown, I think I may feed too much but I'm trying to keep a butterfly and two angels from eating corals.. mandarin has like tripled in size since getting it, most of my fish have a healthy heft to them, my flameback angel may be slightly overweight..

But I feed at least 3 times a day, usually 2 frozen foods and 2 pellet foods for each meal. Example, fish frenzy, marine cuisine, tdo pellets, hatchery pellets (I've also started putting baby brine in because I have a baby hogfish) and I do that 3x a day. Around 7am, 11am, 4pm are feeding times.

I would have 20 if my current ones didn’t get so big.
I have 4 rather large species (albeit a couple take a while to get huge). The others are all medium-small species.

For me it just seems like certain fish grow like weeds and others don’t. Of course there’s always exceptions. There was a recent thread on here concerning this subject. Of course everybody has a theory but I don’t think anyone really knows why you can take two sailfin tangs and put them each in the same sized tank and if I was a betting man one would grow more than the other. Kind of think it’s not much different than human beings. We don’t all grow to be 6’-6” trust me I know smh lol. Anyhow I also feed heavy twice a day with a mix of pellets mysis and raw shrimp and a sheet of nori. I also soak my food in selcon but it still seems like some fish are stuck in time and others you could watch them grow!

They are definitely not growing as fast as their age would normally grow. I’ll try increasing the number of times per day. I’m considering making my own food also. I do the top 4 plus shrimp. I haven’t tried pellets. Do you have a brand? How much of what and when do you normally feed? I’ve gone off the couple professionals in town but am starting to question their protocols a little

I feed 1 cube of each (7 cubes in total in the day - 3 in the morning feed, 4 in the evening feed). As for pellets, I don’t have a specific brand, I generally mix up a bunch of them together into one whole pot.
in your tank I would aim for 6 cubes a day as your Tangs will enjoy feasting a lot however your other fish won’t eat as much.

Wow! 7 cubes per day?? How many fish are you feeding with that amount of food? Just curious I’m trying to gauge if I’m over feeding or under feeding??

I only feed 3 cubes for my 18 fish. Though most are small and I keep a good pod stream going.

Watch your fish. If they eat it all in a minute then feed more. If it takes a few minutes or your fish stop eating while there is still food then it’s too much.
