Every so often we have a thread where someone is looking for reefer friends in their area where there are no clubs.
I'm sitting here thinking what if R2R had a 50 state map that you could click on and see whose in the area, of course the individual hobbyist would have to register to make their location available but it's like a local registry for like minded individuals

I'd love to know who was local to me, I'd definitely host a couple of locals to shoot the breeze about reef tanks.

I don't know if it's feasible, but I can dream

Just wondering lol

I am in a 'no one gives a crap about the ocean' zone. There are no reefing clubs, no facebook clubs, just 1 lfs with a coral section that would embarrass them if I posted it. They have decent fish and I've gotten all my livestock there and have had 0 losses. But it would be cool to find others in my area to possibly swap with or reef talk.

I would love this b/c I can't find any groups in NYC -- there are some in other parts of the state but none in NYC. I recently found a meetup that looks perfect but there hasn't been a meeting or post in like 5 years.
I started out in NYC many many years ago. Before facebook existed or forums were very popular:)
I actually found a few people in the hobby. But it was not easy.
Now i'm in Florida and its still hard to find people with the same interests close by that i can get along with.

I feel like it has to do with the lack of space in the city. And anyone with large amounts of space has deep pockets as well, and is likely to have a tank just for viewing enjoyment/decor that is managed by a service.

That is very true. I was in Brooklyn so a bit more space then the actual city.
But I did become friends with a LFS owner, actually ended being his best man at his wedding and he ended up introducing me to my now wife of 15 years.
Funny how things work out.
I never understood why people would hire someone to service their tank. I mean that's something any reef owner should do themselves i always thought. Where is the joy in that?
Having money should not mean you get to enjoy the fruit with no labor.
But my friend didn't mind, he was making a killing taking care of other peoples tanks.

This is, of course, a generalization, but I feel like wealthy folks like to enjoy the beauty and pleasure of a thing like an enormous reef or marine fish tank w/o any of the work.

Great idea!
I agree. But it would take a bit of coding to pull the geo location of each member from the forum database, then apply it to a custom map database that links it to a section on a map.
I mean its definitely doable. It would need valid information, and more precise location entries then just a state or a city without a state for example. Also maybe a trigger to Opt-in, and if you Opt-in a required field with a Zip Code would be needed to be filled, and that can be used as the data point.
Just spit balling :)

I think this is a fantastic idea. While we are on the subject does anybody here live in Winter Haven Florida? We could talk about each other's tanks and even view each other's tanks get each other's ideas and pointers and what you did different.

Have you looked into Manhatten Reefs? It is a forum where just about everyone is either from the City or LI.

Those people are going to help put my kids through college, so I don’t complain too much.
