How big of a trash can?

Trying to set my marine x60.2 waterbox 36 gallon display tank. And 18 gallon sump. How big of a brute trash can should i get? For mixing and water changes

Well…are you doing daily, weekly, monthly, etc water changes? What percentage water will you be changing? How long do you want to go between making batches, meaning do you want enough for one water change, a months worth of water changes? Do you want enough water on hand for an emergency water change if needed?

I use a 20g brute for my 3 systems.

I make 12gs at time.
Pretty simple as I know 5 cups of my salt in 12gs of rodi equals 1.0265. I also add a premeasured amount of sodium bisulfate to get alk to 7.

They offer something like 20, 30, 44 and 50 gallon sizes. I thought that 30 would be fine and I went with 44 and I wish I had gone 50. So I would suggest a +1 size approach. Given your system volume of about 40 gallons, a 20 gallon can would allow for about a 30% water change. Yeah 20/40 = .5 but you are not going to fill it to the brim so I am being conservative. You might want to go with 30. In a big can, you can mix smaller amounts but you cannot mix bigger amounts in a smaller can. I have 3 cans on casters (I have a tile floor), I have one can that is dedicated to RODI. I have the second that is dedicated to mixing and storing salt water. My third can is for being filled up with the discard water from water changes.

I see you have your sump and what not stated in this thread. Go ahead with a 50-55g mix but be aware you can also get a 10g ATO and mix in that. This would be about 10% and is typical of the storage for normal water changes (plus you can use it as an actual ATO reservoir if desired later).

I do automatic water changes for my Reefer 250 with a 10g Trigger Systems ATO. Works like a charm.
