How big of an RODI unit?

This really needs to be answered by folks with experience with several thousand gallons of saltwater under their care.

If you are going to have multiple aquariums totaling about 5000 gallons including sumps, how big of an RODI unit would you need?

I also want to have two 550 gallon tanks setup as a mixing station.

So in actuality, it would be more along the lines of 6000 gallons.

I was thinking a 400gpd with a booster added on. But even then, if actually did even close to this it would take weeks to produce enough water initially. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a unit if I can help it.

Now, only about 1000 gallons will have corals in it. The rest will only be fish. If this makes a difference at all.

At that point I would just call either Buckeye Hydro or Spectrapure. I think you're probably looking around $1500 at a minimum depending on how you want it setup.

I like this one and add a DI unit. All of the FO systems can get RO only and then reef/frag can get RODI.

Being 10 minutes from Spectrapure I am very familiar with their offerings. What it comes down to is how long you want to wait to make water and how many filter replacements you want to do.

When I was working for an LFS in my area we used a Spectrapure 1000 gpd producer unit. The TDS was 0 coming out and in our area tap water is 800-1200. I would Highly recommend this unit. You can add DI after the unit but may not need to if it is already 0TDS.

The producer units run on regular water pressure and don’t need a booster pump. They are the largest unit you can get that doesn’t require a booster pump. They are also cheaper than you might think.

At the Same LFS we eventually upgraded to a 10,000 GPD system that required a booster pump and payed Puretech a local business to maintain the unit for us. If you want to go bigger than 1,000 GPD you may want to consider this as well. When DI cartridges need multiple people to move them a service makes sense.

The producer was easily serviced by one person did a great job and the membrane lasted about 5 years while still providing 0 TDS water.
