Put together a new (to me) 120 gallon acrylic tank. Came with two durso-style drains, one set to be an emergency one normal. I hard plumbed the drains and used reinforced tubing for the return.

What can I do to quiet the water noise? Hose and air valves for the drains? Cut the drain pipes off above the waterline in the refugium?

Sump is a couple of heavy duty polypropylene totes plumbed together.

Dursos will never be silent, but you can get them to be quieter. The key is matching the amount of water and air getting pulled in. Keep the drain under water, if you raise it above you will always hear the waterfall sounds.

The easiest way to get the air and water flows matched is to use an air pump valve on the top of the standpipe. That way you can easily adjust it. Another option is to drill a hole in the top side of the standpipe and then drill a hole of the same size in a PVC cap. You can rotate the cap to adjust the flow rate by aligning the holes.

I used durso's for years and the only way I found to consistently quiet them was to turn the flow through them, down to 3x to 4x the tank volume, and constantly cleaning the air holes. The salt creep builds up pretty fast and that changes everything.
As long as you have 2 drains, I would go with the herbie style.
I've used that recently on a couple tanks and really like it.
Easy to do and maintain.
