How can i silence my drain to sump

Hi all. I have plumbed my overflow box with pvc. And now it is really loud at the sump. What can I do to make it silent

+1 What bradreef said, however I’m not sure how you’d accomplish that in your setup. Normally pipe feeds underwater into a seperate chamber that then overflows back through the filter sock. My understanding is that this entire portion of the sump contributes to the sound reduction design. In your case maybe a section of flexible hose pipe attached to the end of your PVC would work to at least divert the water closer to the filter sock surface. Might also work with a 45degree PVC elbow so the water comes at an angle instead of straight down. Please don’t blame me for any splashes, I’m not an engineer!!

Would I be able to handle more flow using 1 1/4 pvc . I had to throttle back my return pump to bring the noise down

How big is your tank? I don’t think you need to go so large on the drain pipe diameter. I’ve got 2 x 3/4” pipes connected to my two overflow drains on a 180 gallon, my return line is a 1”. My system runs silently and I get a pretty decent drain rate, I had to throttle my return pump back a little too, otherwise my system would produce a flushing effect that sounded like someone was flushing the toilet every 2 minutes.

Yes I was getting the same flushing sound.
Mine is a 40 gal breeder

In that case I think you did the right thing by dialing back your return pump. Has the noise abated?

It was still noisy after changing to a longer pipe that goes into the water in the sock(rather then it ending above the sock and dumping into the water)? Mine go about 3" from the bottom

Extend the pipe so it is underwater.

Pipe should end right below water surface and not near the bottom.

Additionally, the valve that controls full siphon should be right by the sump and not under the box...unless this is a single drain kind of setup.

That's a good point which I'd forgotten.

Perhaps the OP is running the drain full open.
