How can I test my skimmer?

I bought a used reef octopus 110s for a tank Im not setting up for a while. Whats the best way to test to make sure it's in working order? Disclaimer: I never used a skimmer.

Run it, take the time to tune it, and if she is producing skimmate, it works.

I think the OP meant before the tank was setup lol.

Just put it in a bucket of saltwater(foam will not be produced in fresh). If the motor turns on, and produce's bubbles, it's working.

It's that simple.

Thank you, that's what I meant. Now I just need salt lol. I was hoping I'd get some kind of indication with FW

It will run in FW, just won't bubble up like it does in salt.

Stick it in a bucket of FW, if it fills with water, and overflows(typically what they do in FW), then it runs just fine.
