How can I trust cheato?

looking to add some cheato to my sump, but how do I trust it without quarantine for 72 days? Would the cheato survive a long cold freshwater dip? Would ich survive that? Say 36 to 38 degrees that I keep my refrigerator at? Or maybe a really warm freshwater dip? 100 degrees or so? Ich and cheato knowledgeable people please help.

CoralRX will kill any copepods, then the 16 days is to starve out velvet freeswimmers.

Well, no, that’s not what I posted.

CoralRX kills the copepods that may have ich or velvet tomonts attached. The pods die, the encysted parasite (tomont) plus dead pods fall off the chaeto, then you wash it all out.

When fishless, the freeswimmers die since they can’t find a fish to feed on and embed into. That’s 2 days for ich and 15 days for velvet.


The 76 days fallow is because the ich tomont cyst can live 72 days before releasing theronts. They then swim around for 2 days before they starve since they can’t find a fish. Ad a couple day for insurance= 76 days fallow for ich.

Velvet Tomont for up to 42 days , 15 days freeswimming before starvation (they also photosynthesise which is why they last longer). 59 days.

Since ich last longer, you do fallow for the longer period which is 76 days. This applies to anything that can host any of the parasite developmental-stages. Snails, hermit crabs, rocks, glass... anything that is hard enough for a cyst to attach to

Could a tomont cyst be attached to the cheato, thus you would have to wait up to 72 days? Wouldn’t a fresh water dip work just as well as anything. I know that freshwater dips don’t work on infected fish because the parasite is embedded under the fishes skin, but the ich on the cheato is on the surface.

The cyst can only form on hard surfaces. Think of rocks , shells or skeletons. Even copepod shells

The parasite embedded in the fish isn’t the same as the cyst. The cyst stage can survive freshwater dips, and even a short time dry. Like a few hours. It really needs at least 24 hours completely dry to ensure the cyst is dead.

If your buying salt and tanks that are already wet, you need to find a new petco...

FWIW, I would not buy chaeto commercially. Find a local reefer with some to spare.
