how can this happen

i have a 2.5 gallon pico tank going with 2 hermits in there( 1 scarlett --1 black ) well i found 2 dead hermits in there ...took them out....go to take the shells out.....wait for it.......................there are two hermits in the shells 1 red ----- 1 black.........how can this happen?

They molted. You found the old exoskeletons.

they both molted at the same time. The crabs have a hardened exoskeleton that doesn't grow with them and must be replaced through a molting process.

yes both dead crabs 1 red 1 black.......and i have 2 in there 1 red and 1 black.....no one else added more crabs to the tank.

ahh i see did not know that...know that make a ton on sence ......thanks for the info....was trying to look it up online but cant seem to find anything
